This week, the children have been working on multiplying and dividing in mathematics. In English, the children have been exploring the features of an information text. To help them to explore the purpose of a heading and sub headings, the children have been sorting pictures into categories: what owls eat, where they live and what they look like. This activity involved team work and collaboration. Well done 2H!
On Monday 19th February, the children returned to school full of excitement and anticipation. They were eagerly awaiting a visit from some feathered animals.
The children received a visit from the York Birds of Prey Centre who had some feathery friends to show them! The pupils had a session in the main hall where they saw a bird of prey fly across the room and they discovered some interesting facts about owls. Did you know the claws on an owl are called talons? It is also a myth that owls can turn their heads all the way round but impressively they can turn them up to 270 degrees!
In the afternoon, class 2H had the opportunity to hold an owl (or two ). Some children confidently did this, others were a bit apprehensive, some faced their fears (so proud of those pupils) and others just wanted to give the birds a stroke. The lovely gentleman, Steve, who ran the session was extremely patient and answered lots of questions.
It was a fantastic way to begin the (second) spring term What a hoot!
Week 5 of spring term 1 has been packed with lots of exciting events. The children participated in the Lunar New Year celebrations (The Year of the Dragon) by creating a dragon mask. They also used their creative minds to produce an acrostic poem for a fun poetry competition. It was wonderful to discover that there were lots of budding poets in class 2H! The week ended with the Explorer Day where children dressed up as either explorers from the past or modern day explorers. The creativity involved in lots of the costumes was fabulous and lots of children had brought in their research which they shared with the class. Thank you to all the families who got into the spirit of the event. The children looked amazing and had a fun last day of term. Wishing you all a wonderful half term break.
Last week, the class had a visit from a secret reader! A huge thank you to Millie’s dad who kindly volunteered to come in and read to the children. It was a great opportunity to promote reading. If there are any other parents who would like to volunteer, please contact the school office.
Next week, the children will be participating in a fun poetry competition and dressing up for the Explorer Day. Plus the Lunar New Year begins on 10th February (the Year of the Dragon). What an exciting week ahead!
This week, the children have been busy being creative. They have performed in small groups in music, using percussion instruments. In art lessons, they have participated in observational drawings, the mixing of paints and creating a colour wrap. We ended the week finding out about William’s certificate and what Maths Monkey and Reading Robin had been up to.
The children had another busy week. This included planning a diary entry in English, beginning to recognise money in maths and exploring the history of Captain Cook. The children also worked together in teams to construct different types of bridges. They ended the week with a special visit from a secret reader.
It was wonderful to welcome the children back to school. Over the past two weeks, the children have been settling back into routines and following school expectations. The children are exploring 2D and 3D shapes in maths. In English, they are learning about the features of a diary. In History and Geography, the children are discovering who Captain Cook was and why an explorer needs to be resilient and persevere. In science, the children have been using their collaboration skills to identify different materials (e.g. wood, metal, plastic, rubber, fabric) that objects are made of. In RE, the children had to work in groups to put a jigsaw together to reveal an important message. It was quite a challenging task for some of them but they didn’t give up. Well done 2H! It’s been a busy but enjoyable two weeks.
It has been a busy last week! The children completed their journey stories and their maths topic: addition and subtraction. They made Christmas hats ready for the school dinner that took place on Wednesday. The children practised singing carols for Thursday’s Christingle. They sang beautifully on Thursday and the year 2 readers were great at reading aloud in the hall (not once but twice). Well done Ophelia, Sam, Annabel, Neela and Ali. The children ended the term making Christmas cards for their families as well as delving into a Christmas booklet full of fun activities. A huge thank you to parents for your generosity and kindness in giving gifts to me (Miss Hanley) and Mrs Reehal. We wish each and everyone of you and class 2H a wonderful Christmas break. We look forward to seeing you in the New Year.
On Thursday 14th December, 2H boarded a coach and headed to Leeds City Centre. They visited Leeds Bridge and saw the River Aire. They walked to the corner of Briggate and looked at how Boar Lane looks now in comparison to a painting of the street (by John Atkinson Grimshaw) over 140 years ago. They visited the Corn Exchange which in the past used to have merchants selling corn. The corn was held up to the light (dome window) and checked for its quality. The children walked to the historic Leeds Minster where they were able to view the wonderful architecture, stained and painted glass windows and eat their lunch. The final stop was the Leeds Playhouse. Here the children had a fantastic time watching a performance of The Enormous Crocodile. There was audience participation and lots of humour. It was a musical so lots of the children started dancing to the tunes. Well done 2H for being sensible and staying safe. A huge thank you to the parent volunteers who assisted and helped to make the day go smoothly.
Today, class 2H showcased their dance moves which focused on sport. This was followed by a carousel of events where they were able to demonstrate their knowledge in a Geography, History and Art quiz, participate in an owl trail and spend time in the art studio. Thank you to all those parents who were able to attend this memorable event. Well done 2H! So proud of all of you.
This week, the children have been busy in the art studio displaying their artistic talents through a variety of tasks. This year, the focus is Leeds and the children have been exploring a painting of Boar Lane. They have identified warm and cool colours and used some of these in a session on weaving. They have been experimenting using clay (including cross hatching) and have begun practising some dance moves to celebrate some sporting activities that take place in Leeds. On Friday, 13th December, there will be a celebratory afternoon to showcase their hard work. It would be wonderful if you could attend.
We said goodbye to Ava on Friday. She leaves to start a new school in another city and we all wish her well.
