It has been a busy last week! The children completed their journey stories and their maths topic: addition and subtraction. They made Christmas hats ready for the school dinner that took place on Wednesday. The children practised singing carols for Thursday’s Christingle. They sang beautifully on Thursday and the year 2 readers were great at reading aloud in the hall (not once but twice). Well done Ophelia, Sam, Annabel, Neela and Ali. The children ended the term making Christmas cards for their families as well as delving into a Christmas booklet full of fun activities. A huge thank you to parents for your generosity and kindness in giving gifts to me (Miss Hanley) and Mrs Reehal. We wish each and everyone of you and class 2H a wonderful Christmas break. We look forward to seeing you in the New Year.

On Thursday 14th December, 2H boarded a coach and headed to Leeds City Centre. They visited Leeds Bridge and saw the River Aire. They walked to the corner of Briggate and looked at how Boar Lane looks now in comparison to a painting of the street (by John Atkinson Grimshaw) over 140 years ago. They visited the Corn Exchange which in the past used to have merchants selling corn. The corn was held up to the light (dome window) and checked for its quality. The children walked to the historic Leeds Minster where they were able to view the wonderful architecture, stained and painted glass windows and eat their lunch. The final stop was the Leeds Playhouse. Here the children had a fantastic time watching a performance of The Enormous Crocodile. There was audience participation and lots of humour. It was a musical so lots of the children started dancing to the tunes. Well done 2H for being sensible and staying safe. A huge thank you to the parent volunteers who assisted and helped to make the day go smoothly.

Today, class 2H showcased their dance moves which focused on sport. This was followed by a carousel of events where they were able to demonstrate their knowledge in a Geography, History and Art quiz, participate in an owl trail and spend time in the art studio. Thank you to all those parents who were able to attend this memorable event. Well done 2H! So proud of all of you.

This week, the children have been busy in the art studio displaying their artistic talents through a variety of tasks. This year, the focus is Leeds and the children have been exploring a painting of Boar Lane. They have identified warm and cool colours and used some of these in a session on weaving. They have been experimenting using clay (including cross hatching) and have begun practising some dance moves to celebrate some sporting activities that take place in Leeds. On Friday, 13th December, there will be a celebratory afternoon to showcase their hard work. It would be wonderful if you could attend.

We said goodbye to Ava on Friday. She leaves to start a new school in another city and we all wish her well.

Anti-Bullying Week

Anti-Bullying Week 2023 took place from Monday 13th – Friday 17th November. The theme was Make A Noise About Bullying. The children discussed the term bullying, strategies to deal with this behaviour and the importance of telling an adult if bullying is witnessed or experienced. The children also made banners and participated in a school picket. Furthermore, it was lovely to see children coming to school on Friday wearing their odd socks to support the event. Thank you for your kind donations and supporting such an important message.

It has been a busy but exciting first week back at school! What has been brilliant is that the children have participated together in several activities and events. Great teamwork!

Monday started with Parliament Week. The children read a story about a class who visited Parliament. They explored the role of Parliament, who works there and the difference between the two chambers (House of Commons and House of Lords). This session was followed by a quiz which the children thoroughly enjoyed. They also wrote on an outline of a body an issue that concerns them and then we ended with a discussion (debate) on some of the issues.

During the week, the children had the opportunity to each paint a pot that had been made by a year 3 class. This was to assist and support the upcoming Diwali trail on Monday 13th November. The pots looked bright and colourful. Even Mrs Scott said they looked great. There’s definitely lots of budding artists in this class. Well done 2H!

Finally, the children were involved in preparing for Remembrance Day. They drew around their hand on red paper. The paper hands were used to create a class poppy. The week ended with a short visit to the hall where Luca placed the class poppy next to the cross and Neela read out a poem. The class stood with the rest of key stage 1 in silence for a minute to remember the importance of having peace and harmony in our world.

The last week of term has been a busy yet exciting one. The children have been working hard on their core subjects of maths and writing. They were also busy in the cafe this week, preparing a delicious vegetarian curry. They also did some art work creating a web weaver with wax crayons and water-colours. If that wasn’t enough excitement, they headed to the dance hall on Thursday afternoon to meet the author Jenny York! They had an interactive session where Enis, Ava and Ophelia took part in a role play. The children then had an opportunity to buy a book and have it signed. It’s been a whirlwind term but an enjoyable one. It is hoped that everyone enjoys the half term break.

This week, we practised in English the actions for our instructions on how to trap a dragon. Some of the children volunteered to stand at the front and show the rest of the class their actions. So brave! Well done!

This term, the children have been exploring habitats in science. This week, the children showed how well they could collaborate together. They worked well in teams and discussed which animals would live in a particular habitat. In English, the children read instructions on how to trap a dragon. They started to explore what bossy verbs were (imperative verbs) and enjoyed listening to an online song which made most of them giggle. The children started to learn some actions for the instructions. Let’s just say, it’s work in progress! Two children received incredible stickers for going that extra mile and enthusiastically doing extra work at home. Well done Luca and Alexa! In mathematics, the children used base 10 resources to help their understanding of related facts. For example, if 2+5 = 7 then I know 20+50 = 70 Lots of children did really well seeing the pattern and making the links.

2H have been working really hard this week. They completed their maths unit on place value and persevered through an assessment to check their understanding. In English, the children celebrated National Poetry Day by learning a poem called ‘My Treasures’ by Kate Wakeling. The children have been practising some actions to go alongside the words. Superb contributions were made by lots of children to provide a set of suitable actions. Well done 2H! The week ended with time to hear what fun reading robin had with a child chosen from the class who had taken him home (last weekend). The children listened attentively and then asked some questions.
