This week, the children have been focused on producing great work in both mathematics and writing. They have finally come to the end of place value and are beginning addition and subtraction. They have also been playing a fun maths game called Hit the Button which is helping them to practise their number bonds. In writing, they have started to write their own exciting warning tale.

The children have also been involved in some creative activities. They have been collaborating and creating their own positions in gymnastics. They have also been working well in teams this week to create actions to poems. This was to celebrate National Poetry Day where the theme was counting. The children enjoyed working in small groups and performing their counting poems to the rest of the class. Well done 2H!

We are half way through the first term already! The children are collaborating and focusing on managing their distractions. They have been learning their number bonds to ten and twenty. They have enjoyed an online game Hit the Button which assesses how fluently a child knows their number bonds. The children have also been exploring adjectives, verbs and adverbs to assist with writing a shared story. In computing, the children have been learning how to stay safe online.

This week, the children have been thinking deeply about how we should respect and look after our world. They shared their thoughts in collective worship with Reverend Dave. They have also made comparisons between the River Ganges and the River Aire and discussed issues surrounding pollution. The pupils received a visit from Mr Van Loo (RE Lead) who popped in to see what children were learning in RE. He watched a lesson about how people can pray in different positions to help them focus on their thoughts. He was impressed with their discussions and how insightful the children were. Well done 2H!

The new year 2 pupils have been settling in to a new school term. It has been explained what they need to do if they have a worry. Each child made a worry doll and was introduced to the class worry monster in the first week. This week, the children have been sharing ideas for actions for their class text: Beware of the Dragon! The children have also been collaborating in science and exploring place value in mathematics. The children have been helpful and have tried their best to show the school value of respect.

Year 2 have been kept busy this week! 

On Monday, the children went to Lotherton Hall where they met Florence Nightingale (a nurse from the past – part of our history unit on wonderful women). They were able to look around the house and ask her questions. They also got the opportunity to be nurses and bandage up a teddy. The children explored the grounds and got to observe different animals in the Wildlife Centre (linked to their science unit on animals and their habitats). 

On Tuesday afternoon, the children performed a dance in the hall in front of year 3 pupils. The performance was fantastic! A huge thank you to Mrs Cosgrove who assisted with this and well done 2H for being so amazing!

Key Stage 1 Sports Day took place on Wednesday. The children competed in their teams and had a great time displaying their skills. Well done to all of them!

On Thursday, there was a special delivery to the year 2 cohort. A large box arrived and it contained books for pupils whose parents had ordered a poetry book. A lovely keepsake which can be treasured for many years to come. It has helped to promote a love of reading. Thank you to the families who consented to their child’s poem being published in ‘The Poetry Bus’ book. Complimentary copies that the school received will be kept in the library so that all the children have access to the poems published. 

This week involved 2H participating in assessments to help indicate what they independently know in reading, mathematics, spelling, grammar and punctuation. They were resilient and didn’t give up even when some questions were challenging. The assessments took place in the morning so the children were given some freedom in the afternoon to mix primary paints for a colour wheel, to construct a model using 6 straws and to use other materials to build whatever they liked. They made some wonderful models and enjoyed have some time to increase their collaboration skills Well done 2H!

During week 2 of this term, the children were given a challenge as part of their PSHE lesson. The challenge was to work in groups of four and create the tallest tower using six sheets of paper. The children were also able to use scissors and tape for this task. Fortunately, all the children showed that they could collaborate well in a team. Well done to the winners of the tallest tower!

The last week of summer term one was a busy one!

In English, the children innovated a poem about a monster at the back of the classroom. Lots of children wanted to read their poems aloud, showing a real growth in confidence.

In mathematics, more children attempted the maths challenges. A good example of being determined and not giving up was a tricky challenge about creating ten using different amounts. Ophelia managed to work it out after persevering with this challenge. Well done!

In science, the pupils have been exploring plants. They planted seeds (beans and sunflowers) and patiently waited to see if they would grow. They recorded their observations and realised that seeds grow at different rates. The same applies to children. They develop and grow at different times and stages but eventually they will all flourish.

Science linked nicely to art where the pupils made paper flowers. They enjoyed this creative activity and their flowers looked great. Well done 2H!

This week has been a busy one! The pupils have been working hard to complete their Hot Write: Jo’s Great Escape. Their focus has been on using punctuation correctly and using adjectives, verbs and conjunctions to make their character description engaging.

In mathematics lessons, children have been exploring fractions including unit and non unit fractions. The children have been using their knowledge of times tables and divisions to help them work out a fraction of an amount. Some children brought in maths work they had been doing at home. Well done Alexa and Annabel!

The school week ended with Lina reading out a lovely poem she had written. This was followed by an art lesson where the children drew flowers with a pen. Mrs Turner kindly brought in flowers for the pupils to see and draw. The art work produced by the children was amazing! An art exhibition might be required to display all their beautiful work.

On Monday 6th May through to Friday 10th May, the children celebrated Mental Health Week. They participated in several activities including giving out compliments to their peers during circle time, wearing green (on Thursday) and going on a hunt to find green labels that had words on them. The children managed to get all the words from the hunt and had the challenge of rearranging them to make two sentences. A handful of children were able to successfully do this and as a reward the children watched a wonderful short film ( about friendship and kindness) called ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse’ by Charlie Mackesy. The children were engaged with the film and thoroughly enjoyed watching it. They also joined the rest of the school in the playground ( on Wednesday) for ‘The Big Sing’ which was lovely to listen to.

The children have also been working hard in mathematics. They have been exploring fractions (halves, quarters and thirds). Ophelia received an incredible sticker for spotting the link between fractions and dividing and multiplying. Super impressed! Practising fractions at home would be beneficial and help support your child’s confidence and knowledge of this area of maths. Regular revisiting of the 2S, 5s and 10s times tables would help too.
